A quiet week

Posted: July 16, 2011 by djplaymaker in LIFE, MLB, NFL

How’s it going out there! I know it’s good, except if you’re the L.A area & have to deal w/ Carmagedon. If last week’s sports events were wild, then this week was kinda mild as not many things popped off. Let’s review things shall we!

1) NFL lockout over?- Yes, that’s not a typo as after 4 months of work stoppage, the players & owners reached an agreement on things. However, some hurdles that were in the way were reached as in the owners turning down the one- time right to 1st refusal tags on free agents & the rookie compensation when in the rookie contract, the fifth yr option must be picked up after yr 3, meaning if your the top 10 picks, you get paid the average salary of the top 10 players @ their position & picks 11- 32, the amount would be the average of salary no.3 to 25 @ a given position. From a fans’ point of view, we should be happy because we will have football start on time & resume our Sundays!

2) MLB no shows- As you may know, the NL are on a 2 game winning streak as they won the game again 5-1. However, that wasn’t the biggest story. The story was that 15 replacements were called up to play the game! What is this, the pro bowl! Some of them had legitimate reasons to miss it (injuries & pitchers playing on Sunday) & in the words of Derek Jeter, exaustion played a part for him missing the game. Some of the purists were mad about this. However, as a fan, I wasn’t. If a player skips the game, oh well. You have players who get snubbed originally get a chance to shine since their games aren’t telivised nationally like Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who are in the thick of the NL East race.

3) Michael Irvin- The original “Playmaker” made news this week as he appeared shirtless in this month of Out magazine. This is the no. 1 magazine in the U.S. The reason he did is because he had an older brother (Vaughn, who died in 2006 of stomach cancer) who was gay. He was kinda quiet about it because he was focusing on his career, now he thinks he’s in a different place to deal w/ it. In the article, he said his Cowboys title teams would had accept a player who was gay. I use to be homophobiac, but their people just like us, but have different orientation to who they have sex with. Props to Irvin for doing this. I know this is a controversial topic, but if the governor of California can pass a bill requiring gay studies be taught in high schools, then times have changed in America.

That’s my thoughts of this week. Before I bounce, got some belated shoutouts to my boy Raul Ramos & pre b-day ones to Leticia Robinson aka Letty Bear, who hits 31 next week. Bobo Meets Rhettmatic @ STRICTLY SOCIAL

Playmaker and I went out to The Little Temple Bar last night to check out “Bobo Meets Rhettmatic”. They blessed us with a fusion of turntablism and live procusion play from Eric Bobo (son of the latin jazz legend Willie Bobo) who’s down with Cypress Hill. He brought that raw energy you feel from the power of the drums enhancing the sounds that Dj Rhttmatic (Beatjunkies) was providing. From old skool / True Skool Hip Hop, Funk, & Latin, its a show you have to see live for yourself.

My favorite was when Rhett played Haitian Lady off Willie Bobo’s album Spanish Grease it was cool to see Bobo play his rhythms over his own dads song. They also did a lot of improv and Rhett displaying his skills with the cuts and double times was real ill to see because you hardly hear or see anyone working the tables like that nowadays.

Even though the elements are deeply rooted into Hip Hop, anybody outside of the culture would love and appreciate this live show. So do yourself a favor and check it out! It’s for everybody and anyone who wants to experience music presented in a unique way.

Here’s two still shots of the night. *note: I didn’t want to upload the video we took cause we would rather encourage you to go to the live show and besides Playmaker had the camera and can’t keep the dam camera steady and framed lol… IT’s All Love homie!

Check out their promo vid…..

TRANSFORMERS: BOTCON PASADENA CONVENTION 2011

Photobucket

Hello, I go by -mega7981 and I am a Transformer junkie…

This weekend I had lots of fun at Botcon 2011 in Pasadena, it’s pretty much a Transformer junkies convention. I hung out with Cat and ran into the awesome film director Patricio Ginelsa of Kid Hero Films who skooled me on the significance of the MASTERPIECE series collections that I overlooked and he shared with me some fun facts on his perspective with his love of Transformers. One of them is that he has the whole Marvel comic collection of Transformers G1 series (cue jealousy lol). He’s had them since he was a kid and that led to him being a fan of the comic book world!

Photobucket

Pat’s a real down to earth guy, funny, very approachable and loves his Transformers as much as I do. I remember watching him work during Bambu’s Crooks and Rooks video and I was one of the drivers following the tandem cars that were filming and before we took off he used Transformers to block and explain the route we were taking lol. I almost didn’t listen cause I was in awww of the transformers he brought lol. I think it was Mirage and Wheel jack I got to look at the BTS Video again. *Correction it was Kup and Rodimus Prime lol

Oh I should mention that it was his Birthday weekend and he managed to go to Botcon, watch X-men, see the Star Wars musical at the Hollywood bowl, celebrate his birthday dinner and end it all watching the 35mm film original animated Transformer movie where Optimus dies, all in one weekend. I think Pat is a robot in disguise because I don’t know how you can have the energy and time to do all that! lol.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HOMIE!!!

You can check out Pat’s work here… (it has a cool letter box layout)

Below are some random pics I took that day…..

The one and only Optimus Prime. I think in the new movie Optimus uses his trailer for wings pretty epic…

>>>>>>>>>

Dead center is the MASTERPIECE series of Megatron. Pat explained to me he transforms into a pistol and in robot mode it transforms into an accurate form. Not like the G1 toy you see on the left where he’s all bone legged and has his pistol next to his bong dong lol. Photobucket

>>>>>>

Soundwave an all time Hip Hop favorite for obvious reasons, he has one of the coolest names, the coolest voice and is a walkman!Photobucket

>>>>>

It seems like the new generation of Transformer fans love Bumble Bee. I don’t remember him being that popular back in the day, because he always seemed weak and not ass badass as the leaders of both the Autobots and Decpeticons, but his new and improved Camero form with a crazy flip helmet, I can see why he would be todays favorite.

Photobucket

>>>>>>>

Galvatron about to put a hole in Rodumis. Im cool with that I don’t see him being a top notch leader to replace Optimus lol…

The night before I custom bleached my Levis with both Autobot and Decepticon symbols, I got props from all the other geeks lol….Photobucket

I can’t wait till Dark Of The Moon comes out! Decepticons are gonna run havoc on earth this time, to set up the Autobot’s comeback for the next movie.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The Dark of the Moon game comes out real soon.I’m gonna get this game even though I’m really waiting for War For Cybertron 2. I mean movie title games usually suck but since this was created by High Moon Studios they might actually break that stigma!

>>>>>>>>>>

The game War For Cybertron 2 should be coming out next year 2012 and I’m hoping they don’t mess it up, cause I love the first one, I was even ranked in the #42 once in the team deathmatch multiplayer for the x-box, but I stop playing for a while because it was consuming my life so I had to chill for a bit.

If your an X-Box gamer feel free to add me mega7981 and lets play some Transformer, make sure you have a head set though cause it’s easier to play when teamwork is involved.

SHOUT OUT TOO!!! Chuck Cawthorn and Andrew Betita for the time machine convo that always inspires me!

(PROBABLY ADD MORE PICS SORRY FOR THE SPELLING AND GRAMMER I”LL CHECK IT LATER!!!)

We went all around the planet, pitchin, and no one hit it
I’m the first batter up Ahmad — well then come widdit
All around the planet, pitchin, and no one hit it
I’m the first batter up Ahmad — well then come widdit

So lately I’ve been having convo’s with friends I hardly see now a days, but still keep in contact with via facebook and lot of the talk has been on some time machine talk reflecting on the past of the Classic years of HIP HOP. What up Chuck! What Up Drew! lol Anyway my boy chuck posted the youtube video “Come Widdit” with (in lyrical appearance order) AHMAD, RAS KASS & SAAFIR. Before I heard the song I was like a freshman in high skool reading the Source mag at home and saw Ras-Kass got the “HIP HOP QUOTABLE OF THE MONTH” I use to cut these out and tape them to my bath room wall and just read them while doin bathroom business lol T.M.I. may bad.

When I read along the quotable, I’d try to rap and see if I could guess the rhythm & cadence of the flow than later hear the song and see how close I got to it. To be honest I never got any quotable right lol. I couldn’t find the rhythm at all. It was hard without ever hearing the beat, and after reading it I wondered how in the hell did he cram all these big ass words in here? Like it seem like the flow was going over 4/4 bars with no pauses.Than deciphering the flow was a mind phuck cause It was a complex battle rhyme with hard hitting punch lines. Hella dope I was desperate to find the album this track was on by digging through all the music at the stores cause the internet wasn’t invented yet lol.

I finally figured out what album the single was on. It was on the Street Fighter 2 Soundtrack. It had Nas, Pharcyde, The B.U.M.S., & Anotha LEVEL. If you aint got this album get it. I got like five copies and 2 of them are warped. But every time I see this vinyl album for some reason I just keep buying them like if they were baseball cards.

So when I first heard the song, Ahmad was up to bat first and dropped his gem which had a cool as flow perfect to be the lead off spitter. Than I finally got to hear Ras Kass’s verse and I was like this dude is droppin that modern day science in a battle style cadence. His flow to the beat was just weaving in and out through the bars so fluid. I was very impressed and Inspired. Now after hearing the “Come Widdit” vocal sample, over the banging bass and drum you hear some outer space efx. The song was just an instant banger with a dope group chant for the chorus.

So now Saafir is up to spit clean up. With his on beat off beat flow, he was perfect to be the encore verse to this single. I mean it’s not like I wasn’t familiar with his style cause he’s album Boxcar Sessions Tape came out when I was a freshman so I was already a fan, but the combination of these 3 made an instant banger for the walkman, aka only for the hardcore head  aka the music your ex-girlfriend love to hate lol…..

Now that I think about the whole song should of been printed as a HIP HOP QUOTABLE RHYME OF THE MONTH.

Heres a link to old my mix “MegaMayhem” mix for listen and free download.

“Come Widdit” comes in at the 10:10 minute mark (agaon oly for the hardcore hip hop heads)

Lauryn Hill’s Perspective

WHAT UP FAM!

I’ts been a while since I posted on here. Ever since my grandfather and a close homie passed away (R.I.P.) I lost all motivation to keep up with this online radio blog. So I put everything in hiatus for a full year.

Time does heal the pain but there will always be an incomplete feeling I have inside. It makes me think that life is so much bigger than music, so much bigger than the little things I use to care about. Through this hiatus I learned that you have to live life to the fullest. Such a cliche’ but I’m trying to learn as much as I can and explore new worlds that interest me so I won’t be caught on a “shoulda woulda coulda” situation whenever my time is up. Life is short and you only live once.

Lauryn Hill said it best that you have to experience the down side of life in order to walk the path of success. Life is like different levels of peaks. Once your on top of the mountain you have to head back down and prepare yourself to climb again for new challenges, and the experience is what gives you the inspiration for creativity.

Im starting to feel that inspiration again one step at a time.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

When I first saw this it really helped me to find the answers I was looking for.

“It’s better to be righteous than to be right”

“There was no substance because there was no experience”

WHAT UP FAM!!!

THIS NEWS COVERAGE IS A REFLECTION OF THE SCENE THAT WAS BIG IN MY JUNIOR HIGH / HIGH SCHOOL DAYS IN THE EARLY 90’s. REMEMBER STREET BEAT MAG. BROWN PRIDE / T.W.S. / MASS PRODUCTION / TRINITY / HO PATROL / UNXPECTED etc. THERE WERE SO MANY PARTY CREWS IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD I CAN’T LIST THEM ALL. THIS WAS A TIME WHERE YOU GOT A FLYER, CALL THE PHONE NUMBER TO FIND THE MAP POINT, WHICH WILL GIVE YOU DIRECTIONS TO THE PARTY THAT WAS TOTALLY ILLEGAL. NO MATTER HOW SHADY IT COULD GET WE WOULD STILL GO NO MATTER WHAT.

THE FASHION IS ANOTHER STORY. FROM G.A.T. / FAT CAP / CROSS COLORS / HAT’S WITH YOUR CREW NAME ON IT / FRESH JIVE /FLIGHT JACKETS  etc. AGAIN SO MANY TO LIST I CAN GO ON AND ON,

LASTLY DEEP HOUSE / TECHNO WAS SO BIG BACK THAN. POWER TOOLS ON POWER 106 WAS BORN (SHOUT OUT TO DJ ROBERT CHANGE) AND EVERYBODY JUST WANTED TO DANCE SO HIP HOP WAS HARDELY EVER IN DEMAND AT HOUSE PARTIES. I BEING A HARDCORE HIP HOP FAN FELT LIKE A MINORITY IN THE SCENE BUT I COULDN”T DENY HOW ILL DEEP HOUSE WAS BACK IN THE DAY. HEARING CAJMERE FOR THE FIRST TIME WAS A BLESSING. NOW A DAYS TOP HITS ARE TRYING TO APPLY THAT OLD SOUND TO NEW ELECTRO TRACKS WHICH IS COOL. I”M NOT GONNA HATE ON THAT. BUT I”LL NEVER FORGET THE WATCHING THE DJ’S WORK THE TABLES IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD. DJ 747 r.i.p. , DJ Work, lil Smokey, June Bug , I CAN’t REMEMBER ALL THE NAMES BUT NYFF RESPECT TO YALL, BUT THE BACK YARD PARTY’S WERE YOU KNEW WAS GONNA GET SHADY WTIH GANGSTA’S WAS SO FUN TO BE AT. I THINK IT WAS PRIMARILY BECAUSE OF THE GIRLS THAT WOULD BE THERE THAT WE WOULD RISK OUR LIVES. LOL

DROP A COMMENT IF YOU GOT MEMORIES ON THAT SCENE HOLLA!

IT”S ALL LOVE!!!

YOUR FAVORITE PRODUCERS, FAVORITE PRODUCER…. JAY DEE / J-DILLA / DILLA

Always remembered, never forgotten!

>>>>insert pic

My crew and I first heard of him as Jay-Dee, and no no not Jermaine Dupree lol. His name always came up in the production credits when reading it on a album or cassette cover, like The Pharcydes second album Labcabin, DeLa’s Steaks is High, Erykah Badus “Mamma’s Gun, Common’s Like Water for Chocolate album, etc..

When Slum Village came out, oooweee insert thizz face. I was fortunate to shoot a grip concert video footage of Slum Village during the Good Vibe days. My boy Nathan had permission to hang with them on tour and he’d bring me along to help when any Good Vibe artist played in California. It was a cool experience I got to meet a lot of cool artist and people including Baatin (R.I.P.). They were always humble and down to earth and they all gave me proper dap and signed my J-88 record. I would have never guess they had internal issues. I was such a fanboy that day trying to play it cool lol.

>>>>>insert vinyl pic

Anyway back to my Dilla story………
So Nathan needs to borrow my Cannon Xl1 (which use to be the dope camera back in the day) to shoot a Slum Village show and he could only get 1 media pass, so I was left out. So in exchange to borrow my camera I told him to hook me up with his 2 vinyl copies of white label test presses of “Fall In love” that he said he got from Dilla himself. It had the remix on the b-side and the instrumentals for both versions. Till this day it’s one of my favorite records. I think it was an easy deal for my homie Nathan cause Im sure he felt he could always get more copies since he was always filming them for his documentary. Either way I came up big and never expected for Dilla to pass away, and as a fan my jaw dropped and couldn’t believe it and knew HipHop/Rap music lost a big part of it’s soul and that part can never be replaced.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>insert vinyl pic

Well here’s Stussy’s documentary which gathers everyone close to Dilla, sharing stories on the latter part of his career. I found it on youtube today, so if you haven’t seen it, get your pop corn ready. If you don’t know who Dilla is and you like Hip Hop music….awww man stop jacking off to your Drake poster and smack yourself in the face and act like you know!

IT”S ALL LOVE
